Full Review

XM scores 80.2 out of 100 in our audit, standing out as one of the best brokers for traders who value education, low entry barriers, and multilingual support. With a $5 minimum deposit, 30+ support languages, and the highest education score in our audit (92/100), XM has built its reputation around accessibility. Spreads on standard accounts run wider than raw-spread specialists, which is the main trade-off.

Overall 80.2 / 100

Two numbers stand out. Education & Research at 92 is the highest of any broker we've reviewed. Account Conditions at 90 reflects the $5 minimum deposit, four account types, and 1:1000 leverage on offshore entities. Trading Costs at 72 is the price you pay for XM's beginner focus: standard spreads are wider than what raw-spread brokers like IC Markets or Pepperstone offer.

Regulation & Safety

Regulator Tier License Entity
CySEC (Cyprus) Tier 2 120/10 Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd
ASIC (Australia) Tier 1 443670 Trading Point of Financial Instruments Pty Ltd
DFSA (Dubai) Tier 2 F003484 Trading Point MENA Ltd
FSCA (South Africa) Tier 2 49976 XM SA (Pty) Ltd
FSA Seychelles Tier 3 SD010 Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd

XM has a solid regulatory portfolio. The ASIC license is Tier 1, and three Tier 2 licenses (CySEC, DFSA, FSCA) provide broad geographic coverage. EU clients benefit from MiFID II protections, including the Investor Compensation Fund up to EUR 20,000.

Like most international brokers, clients outside major regulatory jurisdictions are served through the Seychelles entity, where the 1:1000 leverage is available but regulatory protections are lighter.

XM provides negative balance protection, segregated client funds, and is not publicly listed.

Trading Costs

Spreads

XM's spreads are reasonable but not industry-leading. The Ultra Low account is the best value option:

Pair Ultra Low Avg. Standard Avg. Zero Avg.
EUR/USD 0.80 pips 1.60 pips 0.00 pips + $7 commission
GBP/USD 1.30 pips 2.10 pips 0.00 pips + $7 commission
USD/JPY 1.00 pips 1.60 pips 0.00 pips + $7 commission

The Standard and Micro accounts run spreads from 1.60 pips on EUR/USD, which is noticeably wider than what you'll find at IC Markets (0.10 pips raw) or Pepperstone (0.10 pips Razor). The Ultra Low account narrows this gap somewhat, and the Zero account offers raw spreads with commission.

For traders focused on minimising costs, XM isn't the cheapest option. But for beginners, the simplicity of an all-in spread with no commission calculation is appealing.

Commissions

  • Micro, Standard, Ultra Low: $0 per lot
  • Zero: $7 per lot round-turn

Other Fees

  • Inactivity fee: $15/month after 90 days of inactivity
  • Deposit fees: Free
  • Withdrawal fees: Free

The inactivity fee is worth flagging. $15/month kicking in after just 90 days is aggressive compared to the industry. OANDA charges $10/month but only after 12 months. IG charges $12/month after 24 months. If you're someone who takes breaks from trading, this fee will eat into your balance quickly.

Lot Size 1K (micro) 100K 100K 100K

*1:1000 on offshore entities; 1:30 for retail under CySEC/ASIC.

The Micro account trades in 1K lots instead of standard 100K lots. Combined with the $5 minimum, it lets beginners start with extremely small positions. This is a genuinely useful feature for learning.

Demo accounts and Islamic (swap-free) accounts are available. Micro lot trading (0.01 lots) is supported.

Trading Platforms & Tools

Desktop Platforms

XM offers MT4, MT5, and its proprietary XM App.

MetaTrader 4 and MT5 are the core platforms. Standard implementations without notable customisation. If you're already familiar with MetaTrader, there are no surprises.

XM App is a mobile-first proprietary platform. It's simplified and aimed squarely at beginners. Advanced traders will want to stick with MetaTrader.

What's absent: no cTrader, no TradingView. This limits XM compared to Pepperstone (which offers both) and puts it behind IC Markets on platform flexibility. XM also doesn't provide API trading access, which rules it out for algorithmic trading.

Mobile Trading

The XM App and MetaTrader mobile apps are available for iOS and Android. The XM App is clean and beginner-friendly. MetaTrader mobile follows the standard MetaQuotes implementation.

Copy Trading

XM Copy Trading is available, allowing you to follow and copy strategies from other XM traders. It's integrated within the XM ecosystem rather than relying on third-party services.

VPS hosting is offered for traders with qualifying balances.

Deposit & Withdrawal

Method Deposit Time Withdrawal Time Fees
Bank Transfer 1-3 days 2-5 days Free
Visa/Mastercard Instant 1-5 days Free
Skrill Instant Same day Free
Neteller Instant Same day Free

All deposits and withdrawals are free. Processing times are standard. XM supports 11 base currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, CHF, JPY, AUD, HUF, PLN, RUB, SGD, ZAR), which is one of the widest selections available and helps avoid currency conversion fees.

Customer Support

XM's support is a strong point: 24/5 availability via live chat, phone, and email, with 30+ languages supported. That language count is the highest of any broker in our review. For traders who don't speak English as a first language, this matters.

Response quality in testing was good. Live chat connected quickly and agents handled standard queries competently.

Education & Research

This is where XM genuinely excels. The education offering includes:

  • Regular webinars in multiple languages, including live daily training sessions
  • Video tutorials covering platform basics to advanced trading strategies
  • Structured trading courses with progressive difficulty levels
  • Daily market analysis and research reports
  • Trading signals
  • Economic calendar and trading calculators

XM runs live education events globally and has invested heavily in multilingual content. The XM Research hub publishes daily technical and fundamental analysis. For beginners, the structured learning path is one of the best available from any broker.

This is why XM scores 92 in Education & Research, the highest in our audit. AvaTrade (90) is the closest competitor, while raw-spread-focused brokers like IC Markets (62) and Tickmill (68) trail significantly.

Final Verdict

XM is the broker I'd recommend to someone who's just starting out in forex and wants to learn properly. The $5 minimum deposit removes the financial barrier. The Micro account lets you trade with tiny position sizes. And the education hub is genuinely useful, not just marketing fluff.

The trade-off is trading costs. If you're an active trader executing dozens of trades per day, the wider standard spreads will cost you more than what you'd pay at IC Markets, Pepperstone, or Tickmill. The inactivity fee is also a concern for anyone who trades intermittently.

XM ranks #2 in our Best Forex Brokers for Beginners list, behind AvaTrade and ahead of eToro. For beginners, it's an excellent choice. For cost-focused active traders, look at our low spread rankings instead.
