MT5 vs MT4: Why It Matters
If you're still on MT4, here's what you're missing:
Multi-asset trading. MT5 natively supports stocks, futures, and options alongside forex and CFDs. MT4 was built for forex only, and its multi-asset capabilities are bolted on. If your broker offers shares or exchange-traded instruments, you'll likely need MT5 to access them.
More timeframes. MT4 offers 9 timeframes. MT5 offers 21. For traders who analyse on specific intervals (like 2-hour or 8-hour charts), MT5 eliminates the need for custom timeframe indicators.
Better backtesting. MT5's Strategy Tester supports multi-threaded backtesting (using all your CPU cores simultaneously), multi-currency testing, and real tick data. MT4's tester is single-threaded and uses interpolated ticks on shorter timeframes, which can produce misleadingly optimistic results.
More order types. MT5 adds Buy Stop Limit and Sell Stop Limit orders. These are useful for breakout strategies where you want to enter on a pullback after a level breaks.
Built-in economic calendar. MT5 includes a fundamental calendar directly in the platform. No third-party indicator needed.
The honest downside of MT5: The MQL5 community, while growing, is still smaller than MQL4's. Some legacy Expert Advisors only run on MT4 and would need to be rewritten for MT5. If you have a collection of MT4-only EAs you depend on, that's a real switching cost.

MT5 Features Most Traders Overlook
Depth of Market (DOM). MT5 has a built-in DOM window showing buy and sell orders at different price levels. Not all brokers populate it with real data (it depends on their liquidity setup), but when available, it's useful for gauging short-term supply and demand.
Multi-currency backtesting. MT5's Strategy Tester can test strategies that trade multiple pairs simultaneously, or strategies where signals on one pair trigger trades on another. MT4 can only test one pair at a time.
MQL5 Cloud Network. You can rent computing power from other MQL5 users to run optimisations and backtests faster. A complex optimisation that takes 48 hours on your PC can run in a few hours using the cloud network.
Built-in chat and community. MT5 has an integrated MQL5 community where you can browse indicators, EAs, and signals directly from the platform. The quality varies, but the convenience is real.
Netting vs hedging accounts. MT5 supports both account types. Netting consolidates multiple positions in the same instrument into one. Hedging allows simultaneous long and short positions (like MT4). Your broker chooses which mode to offer; most forex brokers offer hedging mode by default.
Migrating from MT4 to MT5
If you're currently on MT4, the switch isn't as painful as it might seem:
Your indicators may need updating. MQL4 indicators don't run on MT5. Many popular indicators have been ported to MQL5, and the MQL5 Market has a large library. For custom indicators, you'll need to convert the code (or hire someone to do it).
Your EAs will need rewriting. MQL4 and MQL5 are similar languages but not identical. Simple EAs can be converted in a few hours. Complex ones may require significant rework. Test thoroughly on demo before running live.
Your chart templates transfer. Most visual settings and template structures carry over. The interface layout is familiar.
You'll gain features. The multi-timeframe analysis, better backtesting, and additional order types make the transition worthwhile for most active traders.

MT5 comes in three flavors, and each has distinct trade-offs:
Desktop (Windows/Mac via Wine or Parallels). Full feature set including Strategy Tester, MQL5 IDE for coding, and all available indicators. This is the version algo traders and power users need. The most responsive charting and fastest order execution.
Web Terminal. Runs in any browser with no download. Good for checking positions from a shared computer or when travelling. Missing: Strategy Tester, MQL5 IDE, some advanced chart features. Adequate for trade management but not for analysis or development.
Mobile (iOS/Android). Clean interface with full trading capability and basic charting. Good for managing positions on the go, setting alerts, and quick analysis. Missing: multi-chart layouts, full indicator library, and any development tools. Best as a companion to desktop, not a replacement.

Free indicators. The Code Base section of MQL5.com has thousands of free indicators and scripts. Sort by rating and recent additions. Read the comments for bug reports and user experiences. Many professional-grade tools are available for free.
Commercial products (MQL5 Market). Before buying, check: developer's profile and history, number of sales, average rating, and whether a demo/rental is available. Avoid products with fewer than 10 reviews or developers with no track record.
Freelance coding. If you need a custom EA or indicator, the MQL5 Freelance section connects you with developers. Prices range from $30 for simple scripts to $500+ for complex EAs. Always get a clear specification before commissioning work.
Forums. The MQL5 Forum is active with discussions on coding, strategy, and platform issues. The English-language section is the largest, but Russian-language content is also extensive (MetaQuotes is a Russian company).

MT5 Expert Advisors: What to Know
If automated trading is part of your plan, MT5's EA environment has matured significantly:
MQL5 is more powerful than MQL4. Object-oriented programming, event-driven architecture, and better memory management. If you're learning to code EAs from scratch, start with MQL5. There's no reason to learn MQL4 at this point unless you're maintaining legacy code.
The MQL5 Market has thousands of products. Commercial EAs, custom indicators, and scripts. Prices range from free to $10,000+. Most expensive EAs are not worth the price. Before buying, check the reviews, examine the developer's profile, and rent the EA for a test period (available for most products).
Backtesting is where MT5 shines. Multi-threaded strategy testing uses all your CPU cores, dramatically reducing optimisation time. For an EA with 4 parameters each tested at 20 values, that's 160,000 combinations. MT4 takes days. MT5 can do it in hours.

MT5's biggest advantage over MT4 is genuine multi-asset support. Here's what becomes possible:
